Mudras Description by Mr. Padmanabh Deshpande:

SAHAJA SHANKHA MUDRA
Formation: Bring the thumbs together and wrap the fingers of both hands together.

Benefits: This mudra energizes 10 nadis and invigorates the whole body. The 10 nadis are: Ida, Pingala, Sushamna, Gandhari, Hastijivha, Poosha, Yashasvini, Alambhushaa, Kohoo and Shankhini. This mudra is good for people with piles problem. Voice becomes smooth and soft. Person is able to perceive subtle things.
Note: This mudra can be done anytime and anywhere for any duration.

SHANKHA MUDRA
Formation: Bring the left hand thumb to the base of the right thumb and wrap other fingers of right hand around the left thumb. Join the tip of right thumb to the tips of left hand index and middle fingers.

Benefits: Improves thyroid and pineal glands. Good for the functioning of heart, intestine and kidney. Improves digestion and removes tonsil problem. Nadis gets purified. Voice becomes smooth and soft like coming off a conch.
Note: This mudra can be done anytime and anywhere for any duration.

APANA VAYU MUDRA / HRIDAY MUDRA
Formation: Join the index finger to the base of thumb and join the tip of the thumb with middle and ring finger. Press the back of the index finger with thumb.

Benefits: This is a combination of 2 mudras: Apana mudra and Vayu mudra. This is called as Mrita sanjivini or Jivana daayi mudra. In case of heart attack this mudra saves life. This mudra rectifies heart palpitations. Doing this mudra every morning and evening for 15 minutes prevents heart attacks. Cures stomach ache, acidity and constipation problems.

Note: This mudra can be done anytime and for any duration.

Vyan Mudra:

Formation: Join the tip of the thumb with the tips of first and middle fingers.

Benefits: This is a very good mudra to control blood pressure, improve blood circulation and reduce fatigue and insomnia. If this mudra is done when there is a sudden increase in blood pressure, it helps to reduce the blood pressure immediately.

Note: This mudra should be done for 15 minutes every day or till the person feels better depending on the severity.

APANA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the thumb to the tip of the middle and ring fingers.

Benefits: Improves digestion and excretion. Cleanses body and mind. Useful for Gas, acidity and constipation problems. Good for people with diabetics. Quick remedy for stomach ache and toothache. Improves eye sight and hearing. If there is cough in throat or chest, this mudra gives a feeling of cough going down and person feels better.

Note: This mudra can be done anytime, anywhere and for any duration.

RUKSHA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of small finger to the base of the thumb. Place the thumb above the small finger. Keep other fingers erect.

Benefits: Beneficial for people with excess urinary problem. Also, this reduces phlegm, cold and sore throats. This is beneficial for people who sweat more.

Note: Do not do this mudra for long time as it reduces the water in the body. Stop doing this mudra when the problem is solved. For better results, Prana mudra should be followed after this mudra.

SURYA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the ring finger to the base of the thumb and place the thumb above the ring finger.

Benefits: This reduces the prithvi tatva in the body. Reduces the body fat. Reduces phlegm in the body (kapha dosha), reduces Asthma, Pneumonia, Sinus and breathing difficulty. Doing Vayu, Akasha and Surya mudra vitalizes Pituitary and Pineal glands.

Note: Do this mudra for 5-15 minutes in the morning and evening. This is to be done while walking. Else, try to sit in Padmasana while doing this mudra, if padmasana is not possible atleast keep the legs folded. Sick person should avoid this mudra.

SHUNYA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the middle finger to the base of the thumb and place the thumb over it. Keep other fingers erect.

Benefits: This reduces the Akasha tatva in the body. Ear pain is reduced. Hearing ability improves, speech clarity improves, reduces stammering problem.

Note: Do this mudra for 15-60 minutes as per the need. Stop doing this mudra when the problem is solved. For better results, Prana mudra should be followed after this mudra.

PRANA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the thumb with ring and little finger and keep other two fingers erect.

Benefits: As the name suggests, it improves the Prana (healing power) in the body. This mudra vitalizes and invigorates the whole body. Improves eye sight. Good for people with leg pain, legs going to sleep and leg muscle pull. Good for any sick person as this increases the immunity. If used while walking for long distance, it does not let you feel tired. If done after meals for 10 minutes, digestion improves.

Diabetes: Apana mudra followed by Prana mudra
Body ache: Vayu Mudra followed by Prana Mudra
Good sleep: Dnyana mudra followed by Prana mudra.
Note: This mudra can be done anytime, anywhere and for any duration. Health will significantly improve if Dnyana, Akasha, Prithvi and Varuna Mudra each are done for a duration of 15 minutes everyday. Prana Mudra must be done after the above mudras to increase the effectiveness of the mudras.

VARUNA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the thumb to the tip of little finger and keep the other three fingers erect.

Benefits: Balances the water content in the body and improves the blood circulation. Brings glow to the skin removing the roughness. Particularly good for people with dry skin, dry cough, burning eyes and skin diseases. Helps in reducing acidity. Unconscious people get consciousness immediately.
Note: Health will significantly improve if Dnyana, Akasha, Prithvi and Varuna Mudra each are done for a duration of 15 minutes everyday. Prana Mudra must be done after the above mudras to increase the effectiveness of the mudras.

PRITHVI MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the thumb to the tip of the ring finger keeping the other three fingers erect.

Benefits: Proper blood circulation. Body weight becomes proportional to height. Mind becomes calm and peaceful. Removes the lethargic feeling. Improves immune system. Excretion becomes normal.
Shabda (sound), Rupa (form), Rasa (Taste), Gandha (smell), Sparsha (touch) are from the earth element. Muscles, bones, hair, veins and skin are made of earth element. This mudra harmonizes all the dnyanendriyas (organs of knowledge).
Note: Health will significantly improve if Dnyana, Akasha, Prithvi and Varuna Mudra each are done for a duration of 15 minutes everyday. Prana Mudra must be done after the above mudras to increase the effectiveness of the mudras.

AKASHA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the thumb to the tip of Middle finger and keeping the other three fingers erect.

Benefits: Balances the space inside the body. Strengthens the heart muscles. Strengthens the bones. Improves hearing. If done during yawning, the jaw does not lock.

Note: Health will significantly improve if Dnyana, Akasha, Prithvi and Varuna Mudra each are done for a duration of 15 minutes everyday. Prana Mudra must be done after the above mudras to increase the effectiveness of the mudras.

VAYU MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the index finger to the base of the thumb and place the thumb over it. Keep other fingers erect.

Benefits: This reduces the vayu tatva in the body. This is particularly beneficial for people with vata dosha – like, arthritis, spondylitis, gas problem, body ache, knee pain, sciatica, bulged stomach. This also improves the concentration and beneficial before the meditation. If this mudra is done when there is a cramp in the legs, the cramp reduces immediately. If done for 10-15 minutes before sleeping, the body does not get heavy on the next day.

This mudra harmonizes all 5 upa-pranas: Nag (belching), Kurma (blinking), Krikala (sneezing), Devadatta (yawning), Dhananjay (preserving the body for a while after death).

Note: Do this mudra for 45 minutes or 15 minutes thrice in a day. Stop doing this mudra when the problem is solved. For better results, Prana mudra should be followed after this mudra.

DNYANA MUDRA
Formation: Join the tip of the thumb to the tip of Index finger and keep the other three fingers erect.

Benefits: Brings calmness, brings down anger, improves concentration, memory, decision making ability. Reduces laziness. This is good for people getting frequent head ache and sleeplessness. This is useful for meditation.This can be done any time and any place. This Mudra energizes pituitary and pineal glands.
If done for 45 minutes daily, the above benefits can be seen in 3 months. It can also be done for 15 minutes thrice in a day.
Note: Health will significantly improve if Dnyana, Akasha, Prithvi and Varuna Mudra each are done for a duration of 15 minutes everyday. Prana Mudra must be done after the above mudras to increase the effectiveness of the mudras.
